Syria believes in UN pivotal role to combat illicit trade in weapons, Sabbagh says

New York, Syria has stressed the need for international community to prevent different kinds of weapons from reaching terrorists.

Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Bassam Sabbagh said on Monday that Syria believes in the UN pivotal role regarding disarmament as a basic factor to achieve targets of the Charter, on top, to let the coming generations avoid catastrophe of wars.

Sabbagh added at UN security council open debate on “the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects” that a number of countries have supplied terrorist organizations with different kinds of weapons during years of terrorist war on Syria, and this hostile method had grave impacts in prolonging the span of crisis that claimed thousands of Syrians’ lives.

He went on to say that financing the purchase of weapons and facilitating their smuggling by some known countries to destabilize situation of other countries require a clear condemnation and deterrent measures as these acts violate UN Security council resolutions relevant to counter-terrorism.

“Syria expresses concern over some countries’ non-commitment to their obligations regarding the charter and allowing the delivery of huge quantities of weapons to the terrorist organizations in many states, including Syria,” Sabbagh said.
