Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian, said in response to questions at a joint press conference with the High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell:

"We wanted to take the initiative by inviting the International Support Group for Lebanon to convene tomorrow in Paris, with the aim of encouraging the Lebanese authorities to realize the seriousness of the situation, suggesting to them a move towards reforms - since the Lebanese authorities will be represented - and also urging them to take into account the requests of the street and the Lebanese people who have been demonstrating regularly since October 17. The demands of this long-standing popular movement must be heard."

"The Lebanese authorities must be able to form a government quickly because any delay will continue to worsen the situation. Furthermore, this government must be capable of conducting the reforms urgently needed by the country. We had already met here in April 2018 at the initiative of France, within the framework of CEDRE, and we had at that time devoted significant amounts of financial support, provided that the necessary reforms are implemented. Things have been put on hold, for the moment, since neither reforms were implemented nor did stability prevail. This is therefore a strong call to be made tomorrow to all those who can act so that Lebanon can regain stability," he said.
