President of the Lebanese Kataeb Party, MP Sami Gemayel, visited this Tuesday, along with a delegation, the headquarters of the General Labor Confederation and met with its President Bechara Al Asmar, with talks touching on the political and economic situation in Lebanon and the planned movements by both parties to set up a reform plan.

Gemayel said the Kataeb and the GLC had "a common cause and a joint struggle to defend the Lebanese citizens. We want to agree and coordinate with the Union on the reformist agenda. We all have to press the country to achieve reforms, because it is the one thing capable of saving the country."

He pointed to "the economic stalemate which has led to an increase in the unemployment rate among citizens. (...) It is no longer acceptable for the country to remain suspended because of a minister from here and a minister from there."

"If they cannot agree on quotas and divide the ministries between one other, we call on the President and the Prime Minister to take the initiative immediately to stop all this quota controversy, which has become shameful for Lebanon and the right of the Lebanese people in light of all this suffering. We request the formation of a government of specialists away from quotas. This government's task ought to be developing a reform program and starting its implementing," Gemayel urged.

"We are sounding the alarm, hand in hand with the General Labor Confederation," he said, stressing that the people must not be taken hostage for the sake of narrow interests.
