Lebanese Forces Party leader, Samir Geagea, issued on Wednesday the following statement:

"It is beyond doubt, especially after the statement made by caretaker Minister of State for anti-corruption affairs, Nicolas Tueni, that dozens of fuel tankers (...) are being smuggled every day from Syria to Lebanon across the eastern and northern borders, causing a loss to the Lebanese treasury by hundreds of thousands of dollars daily, and thus tens of millions of dollars yearly.

Lebanon is looking in every corner of the world for aid to support its budget and national economy while tens of millions of dollars are being wasted annually. Consequently, we wish upon the Minister of Finance, Ali Hassan Khalil, in his capacity as the tutor of the Lebanese Customs, to open an immediate investigation into the case, determine those responsible and stop the ongoing smuggling operations. We also hope on the President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, and Prime Minister Saad Hariri, to give the necessary and clear instructions to the Lebanese Army Command so as to close the illegal crossings through which the smuggling operations are taking place."
