BAGHDAD, A senior North Korean General flew to the United States on a first-ever visit to a North Korean personality at a time when the two countries are preparing for a summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un .

"General Kim Jong-chul, also Kim's deputy, arrived at Beijing airport on Tuesday to leave for New York on Wednesday after talks with Chinese officials," Yonhap News Agency quoted diplomatic sources as saying.

Trump confirmed in a tweet on Tuesday morning that the North Korean General was on his way to the United States.

"We have set up a wonderful team for our talks with North Korea, and the summit and more meetings are being held, and Kim Yong-Chul, the deputy of the North Korean leader, is on his way to New York now, a strong response to my message, thank you."

General Kim Young-Chul is the right hand of the North Korean leader and has played a very important role in recent diplomatic tours aimed at ending the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula.

He accompanied Kim Jong-un on his last two trips to China to meet President Xi Jinping and held talks with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo when the latter visited Pyongyang.

The visit comes as part of a diplomatic rapprochement as preparations for the US-North Korean summit, which has not been settled in Singapore on June 12, are accelerating.

US negotiators, led by US Ambassador to the Philippines Song Kim, met with their North Korean counterparts on Sunday in a village in the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas.
